Dispirit | Echoes

For any forest witches looking for a new addition to their “foraging for mushrooms'' playlist, look no further than Dispirit’s new single, “Echoes.” Fans of Wolf Alice, The Last Dinner Party, London After Midnight and The Japanese House (as well as woodland-dwelling spellcasters) are sure to feel right at home with the dreamy vocals, melancholic production and shimmering harmonies, with the occasional healthy sprinkling of grunge inspired guitar riffs.

The Midlands band made their debut with “On My Own” in late 2023, and they did not disappoint with their follow up in the form of “Echoes.” The four members of Dispirit are very active in Birmingham’s live music scene, regularly playing shows at the well-loved Sunflower Lounge. Prior to forming Dispirit, the lead singer/bassist had been a part of other musical projects with rhythm guitarist Emily Tobin and drummer Josh Morson. When they found lead guitarist Dom Hodgkins, Dispirit was officially formed. Echoes is the second song from their upcoming summer EP (title yet to be announced!).

Taking a riff and verse shelved by Taylor and Morson two years prior, they incorporated the musical talents of Tobin and sound engineering expertise of both Morson and Hodgkins to create “Echoes.” A true testament to the magic of collaboration; the four band members polished and strengthened the foundation that Taylor and Morson had begun with, and the resulting song is truly spellbinding.

The band said this about their new single: “”Echoes” has a pretty and melancholy first half, which abruptly contrasts into a grungy and atmospheric anthem when the chorus lands, reverting back to our roots of dreamy 90's grunge.” The seamless blending of moods in the song feels at once unexpected and organic. One of the band’s main influences, Wolf Alice, pulls off a similar thing in their single “Visions of a Life,” with their blending of light, floaty melodies and dark grungy riffs. Lead singer Ellie Taylor describes the single as darkly nostalgic for past lovers, reminiscing on “finding true love in dark places,” confirming the song's intention of melding both light and dark.

All in all, if you are a fan of the darkly romantic, the dreamily nostalgic, or the moodily punk, you will likely be a fan of Dispirit.
