‘Carousel’ | Headwired

April 7 | Written By Jessica Pispisa

The first song a brand-new band ever releases to the public is precarious business. It’s that major jump where you put yourself out in front of the world, and say, “We’re here”. There are no guarantees if it will make or break you.

Headwired have nothing to worry about. Hailing from the West Midlands, their debut single, ‘Carousel’, is a piece of indie rock perfection. It has got everything that one wants in a well-crafted song, imbued with the replay ability factor. Produced by the legendary Gavin Monaghan (Robert Plant, Editors, Paolo Nutini, The Sherlocks, to name a few) in his Magic Garden Studios, they have struck gold in not only having a superstar producer in helming their debut single, but just the fact that it’s a really good song.

Carousel by Headwired

It starts with a swaggering baseline that immediately brings to mind any song from the iconic Arctic Monkeys album ‘AM,’ except there is no posturing or lyrics that verge on haikus. The lyrics are straightforward and are full of memories of a relationship that has left behind many mixed feelings, a plea about resisting falling back into a situationship (a term we all love to hate) you both want, but know it is no good. ‘I hope you’re doing well/ but I have the strangest feeling you’ve just arrived from hell’ kicks off the chorus, and that is serious self-awareness. Vulnerability and bluntness are the not-so secret ingredients that can take a song from being a Radio X filler to one worthy of repeats in your preferred music streaming platform. With Carousel, the three-piece Headwired shows that not only do they know the formula but can make it work to benefit their own sound. The melodic guitars, thundering drums, and vocal deliveries are clean, sharp, but still contain that edginess that any great band worth their salt naturally has. They have it, and they are ready to take their place in the indie rock scene.

Carousel is a strong debut. It is cool, loud, and leaves a very good first impression. It holds promise for this band that have already made waves in their local scene, and one to keep tabs on as they go further into the future. Headwired have confidently arrived and made themselves heard with a banger of a tune. By this song alone, you’ll want them to come ‘round again as many times as they’ll like.
