Milkshed | ‘Mud’

Milkshed is an alternative punk grunge trio group including Cam Gallagher, Jack Tulley, and Alf Grey who are originally from Southwest England. Milkshed are musically and sonically influenced by bands like Nirvana, as well as the Pixies. Milkshed incorporates a catchy 90’s punk grunge and garage sound, with pop-based songwriting abilities to their new EP ‘Mud’ which will heavily appeal to fans of the genre.
The EP consists of four tracks including ‘Fairweather Friend’, ‘Apex Predator’, ‘Burning Bridges’ and ‘Mud’, all featuring infectious electric guitar and drumming instrumentals. The group has already gained several thousand streams combined on the tracks ‘Mud’, ‘Burning Bridges’, and ‘Apex Predator’ on streaming platforms such as Spotify. The band is set to make their musical mark with this new EP, live shows this spring, and a performance secured at Glastonbury Festival.
‘Apex Predator’ was the band's first debut single release and was entirely self-produced including recording and mixing elements. The track encapsulates the band's fierce and energetic abilities, through the upbeat electric guitar instrumentals. The track simultaneously features philosophical and deeper meaning that can be heard in the lyrics ‘like voices through the crowd we’re all just avatars, spirit mirrors, far too emotional to see it clear enough. ‘
‘Burning Bridges’ became the track that would introduce the band to Grammy-winning producer Adrian Bushby. It is also an emotional track, that expresses difficulty in trying to support a companion in trying to break away from negative habits or feelings. The lyrics read ‘I don’t wanna live like that, don’t let me catch me listening to the voices that are in your head, don’t turn your back cause I can’t see you suffering take a step into the light instead’.
‘Mud’ is Milkshed’s latest single before announcing their full EP project, speaking about ‘Mud’ Cam stated, ‘’The track is about feeling at odds with the world around you while coming to terms with the fact that things don’t pan out as expected’’. This track certainly speaks to feelings which many people might find relatable, in terms of figuring it out and finding purpose. This can be highlighted through the opening lyrics ‘ living in the mud, is it how you imagined, is your head in love is your heart a distraction, do the things you see make you feel like an alien’.
The track ‘Fairweather Friend’ is another upbeat and energetic track which undoubtedly reminds listeners of that 90’s nostalgic alternative grunge sound, whilst also having strong replay potential. The opening lyrics read ‘once again, I guess you feel in love again, you better nip it in the bud my friend before it’s all too much’. Whilst the hook reads, ‘what if I said I'm just another fairweather friend, it's all in my head, I guess I should’ve noticed I’m picking up the pieces’.
Milkshed’s new EP is promising. The songs as well as lyrics are memorable, and the project makes great use of instrumentals. This will be compelling to listeners of the alternative rock genres.
