Skyler Cocco | ‘Anxious Attachment’

January 14 | Written By Emily Whitchurch

Skyler Cocco is a songwriter, singer, producer and instrumentalist, originating from New York and now based in LA. Her latest single, ‘Anxious Attachment’ was released on November 15th. With its 80s synth pop and indie rock influences, ‘Anxious Attachment’ is a candid, catchy ode to anxiety and overthinking, drawing inspiration from bands like MUNA and HAIM.

Slowly fading in, the track features strong percussion throughout, much like a consistent heartbeat. Indeed, at the heart of the song, Cocco is refreshingly vulnerable, opening up about intrusive thoughts that many listeners may also experience. The opening line “pretty words don’t mean shit when you’re not here” launches us straight into Cocco’s frustrated mindset - she refuses to shy away from her feelings. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me, it’s bitter cold, I feel it coming over me”, she sings. The lyrical dissonance is unmistakable - pensive lyrics combined with fun, upbeat instrumentals create a sense of authentic relatability, inviting connection with listeners to dance away their own anxieties.

Towards the end of the track, “when you don’t text back” echoes in the background, reminiscent of an anxious thought that you can’t quite shake, however irrational it may be. These layered vocals add depth to the track and also make for a much more enjoyable, dynamic listening experience.

Cocco has already racked up over 22,700 monthly listeners on Spotify. Her song “Party” has amassed over 1 million streams, a collaboration with fellow LA-based artist Tsu Nami about social anxiety. With honesty and vulnerability at the core of her work, Cocco is bound to go far, building a loyal fanbase and cultivating a space for self-expression.
