Sister Madds - ‘Can’t Read Your Lips’ | SIngle Review

Bratty pop-rock group, Sister Madds released their new single ‘Can’t Read Your Lips’ on May 17th and this new-generation love song undoubtably aims straight at the heart.

The up-and-coming Glasgow band is best known for their support for Indie artists Connie Constance and ARXX, as well as being named on Vic Galloway of BBC Scotland’s “25 Scottish Artists to Watch in 2024”. Since their first release last January, the group has been dropping powerful singles that shed light on the difficulties of relationships, as well as the struggles this generation faces. The single features the work of producer Blair Crichton, best known for his work with Dead Pony; gives the song a more vigorous sound to back the strong vocals.

With a similar sound to hit brat pop-rock artists: The Ting Tings, Kesha, and Iona Pop, this song inherits a familiar sound of energetic pop while maintaining that perfect hint of rock. The song explores the vulnerabilities of being in a relationship while looking at the uncertainties that come along with it. The song title itself ‘Can’t Read Your Lips’ demonstrates the singer’s desire to pull something out of their partner and get them to say something.

The lyrics repeat the words “spit it out, spit it out,” once again showing that yearning for this person to say that they need to say but them saying silent. There’s a frustrating feeling when talking to someone who thinks you can read their mind and all you want to say to them is “I can’t read your mind.” This song perfectly represents that frustration and showcases the vulnerability that comes with being in that relationship where a person’s words consume you.

“I wanna breathe every breathe you do,” and “The way your silence is deafening” show this person’s love for their partner and how even though this person won’t tell them what is on their mind, in the end there is still love and admiration there. The lyrics capture the true openness that comes with being in a relationship and the frustrations that arise when a lack of communication occurs.

In the end, this song does a fantastic job at capturing the feelings of not knowing where someone stands in their relationship and forcing their voice to be heard. This song gives a taste of the next-generation music the group can create. Sister Madds is also set to headline their first Scottish tour ‘The Teeny Tiny Tour’ this May.
