Katerina - Ballad Of A Hollywood Dreamer | Single Review

March 22 | Written By Coren Farley

Katerina’s first independent single ‘Ballad of a Hollywood Dreamer’ released on the 15th of March is a captivating slow indie track that plays with your emotions, the melancholic guitar accompanied with her beautiful ethereal vocals tell a story of a girl living inside a movie forever after pining after the life of an actress and stepping into the tv screen.

The track shows incredibly well why guitar and vocals work so happily together as Katerina’s vocals almost seem to take charge of the guitars direction in this song..

It’s clear that Katerina’s has worked hard to create a backing track that shows off her unique voice whilst still allowing for the accompanying instruments to bring the song to life. As the song progresses gentle drums are added that really bring the piece together, the indie style is evident in this ballad as the listener takes a relaxed yet emotional journey. The bittersweetness accompanied with the moodiness of the song builds to really let the listener feel the narrator’s story.

The singles artwork fits perfectly with story of the track, it seems incredibly fitting that the woman on the album is drawn seemingly trapped amongst the other photographed images as the narrator herself is trapped by her own dreams. The contrast between the photographs and the drawing also creates a parallel to real life and imagination, blurring the line between what is real and what we want to be real.

Katarina’s vocals are hauntingly memorable on ‘Ballad of a Hollywood dreamer’ and the style is very similar to her debut single,

‘They’re Trying to Sell my Books’ released as part of Damfino’s compilations album at the end of 2022. The debut told the story of a girl whose parents were eager to driver her out of the house, attempting this by threatening to sell her books. You can listen to ‘They’re trying to sell my books’ here.

Originally from Greece Katerina has recently moved to Scotland to continue working on her passion for music by studying commercial music at university there. The 20-year-old artist has performed live previously at CamGlen radio and Culture Incrociate, a cross cultural Italian music festival. She intends to launch ‘Ballad of a Hollywood dreamer’ on the 23rd of March at Ivory Blacks in Glasgow, if music lovers want to experience the emotionally charged track in person tickets are available here.

This track is one for the daydreamer within us all, it reminds us to dream big but also to take a break from the clouds once in a while and remember what’s going on around us now as to not become completely lost in them.
