Gabi Sklar - 'Lonely Times' | Single Review

February 7 | Written By Eli Reinhardt

Gabi Sklar is a prominent artist who’s found great success in her genre of pop. Her new single ‘Lonely Times’ (2023), is a personal melody discussing social pressure and how it leads to further separation from friends and large gatherings.

‘Lonely Times’ explores the idea of being the “life of the party” in a way that feels limiting to whoever is bestowed that title. The constant pressure of attending and staying at these events only makes Gabi feel like leaving them even more. Nowadays, being by herself feels more comfortable than being with others at these sorts of gatherings. She attributes this to the lonely times we currently live in as a society. The song understands that there’s a problem with this, but nobody knows the answer. Even in a crowded room, it feels so lonely.

The song itself is upbeat and adapts to how Gabi flows throughout her lyrics. The tempo of her vocal delivery feels like an instrument itself. Which makes the subtle bass and snapping feel like a natural progression to the track. ‘Lonely Times’ truly shines when the beat lessens and Gabi is able to show off her amazing vocals. These sections feel personal to the listener and break up the song into digestible pieces that make each part feel fresh.

It’s able to explore the modern trend of loneliness in such an elegant manner that it can leave listeners wanting more. Gabi is able to nail the topic with a personal understanding of how isolating modern society can be but doesn’t expand on this more than the base premise she establishes early on in the track. A few more lines would go a long way, but it doesn’t ruin the song by any means. If anything, it shows how relatable and captivating Gabi’s performance can be.
