Bears in Trees | The South London band you should be listening to

The self-described “folk-punk” band may have been together since 2014 but the South-London foursome remained a well kept secret amongst their fans until their TikTok videos began to gain some traction in early 2021. The videos, posted on the Bears in Trees’s TikTok account feature witty commentary on the bands demographic such as “people who were scarred by tumblr dot com.” and “people who used to draw their tattoo ideas on their arms in sharpie.” As well as glimpses into the everyday life of four best friends in a band, comedic sketches and of course, snippets of new music. Perhaps it is the easy-going personable vibe of the videos which earned Bears in Trees a following of just under 500K on the platform.
However, with their online following growing day by day, one can’t help but to compare their sudden rise up the ranks from internet obscurity to Tik Tok sweethearts to the golden era of YouTube musicians in the 2010’s which assisted in the fame of artists such as 5 Seconds of Summer, Dodie and Bry. If the similarities are anything to go by in Bears in Trees own career then they can expect good things to come.
It is then not all that surprising to hear that Bears in Trees were invited along as support by You Me At Six on their latest album tour run in the UK. The tour, which kicked off on the 1st of February in Plymouth before stopping off for two sold out dates in the Glasgow Barrowlands and continuing throughout the country, ending in London’s legendary Alexandria Palace on the 11th of February. The opportunities provided by the guest spot on the line-up means the young band have been able to tick off some massive goals while playing on some of the biggest stages of their careers, and to multiple sold out crowds of up to ten thousand. An achievement which many artists in similar genres don’t always manage to complete.
Seeing first-hand what Bears in Trees was all about when the tour stopped off in Glasgow at the Barrowlands was an honourable experience. Despite being given the early support slot on an already star studded roster, the band took to the large and busy stage with the confidence of a headliner.Taking up space and commanding the room with their own enthusiasm. The seven song set was incredibly high energy, helped along happily by keen fans in the front rows who had come out early to show their support singing along with passion. While the majority the of venue may not have known who Bears in Trees were before their set they definitely captured the crowd, not a soul was stood still throughout the performance and many who were able to pick up on choruses attempted to sing along and cheers of “Mon the bears!” echoed round the room in between songs. Bears in Trees may have entered the stage with just a handful of their Scottish fans dotted around the barrier area of the venue but it is almost guaranteed that they left with many new fans too. With the hype train not appearing to be slowing down anytime soon, this is a feeling they should get used to.
