Marseille - ‘This Dream of Mine’ | Album Review

September 18 | Written By Anna Konovalenko

Emerging from a diverse blend of inspirational waves of 90’s Madchester, the 60’s Merseybeat and the 60’s Psychedelia movements, a young indie rock band Marseille hits this August with a fresh album. The fans will hear a new flow of indie beats already on August 25, 2023.

Somewhere in Derby, four like-minded guys decided to create an indie-rock band. Vocalist Will Brown, guitarists Joe Labram, Lennon Hall, Felix Moxey, and drummer Tom Spray formed Marseille in 2021. The young band is moving towards success at a fast pace. For the past three years, playing festivals like YNOT and Isle of Wight, Marseille has been winning the hearts of its fans all over again. Their latest album FREEDOM EP, launched in May 2023, has brought more admirers. More so, the music band has recently signed a contract with record label Bubblebrain Records.

Thus the new album is something many fans have been waiting for. It has four original songs with a leading single 'This Dream of Mine'. The song has a strong narrative of jangle pop - the genre well known for its both nostalgic and uplifting ways. Much like the iconic jangle pop representatives R.E.M. and The Smiths, Marseille's signature style has a dynamic and vigorous tempo.

'This Dream of Mine' starts with a 50-second instrumental intro with distinctive drum beats and temperamental guitar tunes that immerse the listener in a particular atmosphere creating a perfect mood to enjoy the song. Lyrics erupt, creating a surge of euphoria and captivating listeners. The synergy between the words and the melody becomes evident, seamlessly blending to show Marseille's unique artistic way.

Will Brown, the lead singer and songwriter, expresses his personal feelings during the creation of 'This Dream of Mine': "It was the sort of song I’ve been wanting to bring to the band for a while – a high-energy, feel-good song yet keeping the jangle-pop sound intact. I remember jamming out the song for the first time in rehearsal and a smile I couldn’t hold back started beaming on my face. If the single can do that for our listeners and fans then we will have succeeded.”

The B-side concludes the album with three songs. Evidently so, they emphasize the completeness of Marseille’s style, skillfully merging lyrics and melody. That is the most attractive part of the album – the broad combination of songs. Marseille explores indie rock in many forms without limiting its artistry potential. Whether it's the soft summer tunes of jangle pop love song 'Brightest Star', the exquisitely nostalgic breakup track 'I Love You (So Much More)' or the psychedelic frenzy of  'Devil's Gonna Get You' with chiming guitars.

This Dream of Mine + B-Sides is a perfect chance to farewell this summer, recalling all milestones and preparing for a new adventurous fall ahead.
