Dead Bird Lady - ‘The Granny House’ | EP Review

March 04 | Written By Anna Konovalenko

Laura Salas Ramirez with the pseudonym Dead Bird Lady has recently released her first EP ‘The Granny House’. Dead Bird Lady is already acquainted with the stage from 2020 when she released her first single ‘February’. Back then she was making her first steps into the music field. And now as a more experienced and mature artist, she presents a complex and unique EP ‘The Granny House’.

Dead Bird Lady has French-Mexican roots. She travelled the world, lived in France, and spent most of her adult life in Iceland before settling down in the Stoke-on-Trent area, England. This multiculturalism of her personality is reflected in the songs not surprisingly.

The EP is an illustration of the inner world of the artist, her thoughts and feelings. Listening to the songs, the listener can distinguish all the spectrum of emotions - love, loss, grief, the search for cultural identity, guilt and so on. Since 2018 when Lady Bird was living in Iceland she was shaping her style transforming it into a genuine blend of music instruments, vocals and effects. There is an impression that each song in ‘The Granny House’ reflects a separate side of Laura’s personality. Listening to the album, each song feels like an addiction. When letting the rhythms and the tunes completely take over you, there comes a realization that the album cannot be more complete.

The EP has five songs each with their remarkability. The song ‘The Hunt’ is wild and dangerous. It's close to experiencing a mystery you cannot solve. It draws you in deeper and deeper, even though you're aware the answer may never be found. It sounds almost like a spell ‘Silence so thick/ I can hear the moonquake/ It won't be so quick/ Rain season is the way’.

The song ‘Pollen’ was dropped in October 2023 and already achieved the success it deserves. The song screams with its folklore patterns. The authenticity that leaks out from the song is marvellous. The lead of string instruments followed by interchangeable low and high timbres, that blend in together, create magic vibrations. Dead Lady Bird says that the song explores the theme of self-destructive habits from those that are recognized as harmful to those that seem harmless.

The name of the EP is symbolic of Dead Lady Bird. She named The Granny House the first house she moved to in Iceland. One can suggest that the EP is a tribute to her time and experiences in Iceland, perhaps this is even her way to imprint and treasure those memories. In her music, you can catch the influences of artists like Kate Bush, Dolores O‘Riordan, Lisa Hannigan and Florence & The Machine. The artists are widely recognised for their dynamic and emotion-driven styles. Dead Lady Bird, akin to them, conveys similar themes of catharsis through her music.

You can find 'The Granny House' on all major streaming platforms. If you're seeking authentic songs to add to your playlist, Dead Lady Bird is the artist you should definitely check out. Her music will diversify your playlist bringing in unique folklore motives.
